Adelaide Tutors teaches SACE Stage 1 and Stage 2 Chemistry in small groups of no more than 6 students, in person at Camden Park. Chemistry classes are taken by a specialist chemistry tutor and run in the same format as our Mathematics and Physics classes.
SACE Chemistry asks students to do several different things well. They need to remember a large body of content, reason through calculations such as stoichiometry and equilibrium, explain observations in precise written language, and design and evaluate practical investigations. Students often manage one of these and lose marks on the others.
Who This Tutoring Is For
This tutoring suits Year 11 and Year 12 students studying SACE Chemistry who want a clearer grasp of the concepts, more confidence with calculations, or stronger written explanations. It is also useful for students aiming at courses where chemistry is a prerequisite or assumed knowledge, and for students taking Chemistry alongside Mathematical Methods, Physics or Biology.
What Students Work On
Classes follow the SACE Chemistry subject outline. The table below shows the topics set for each stage.
| Stage | Topics in the SACE subject outline |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 (Year 11) | Materials and their atoms; combinations of atoms; molecules; mixtures and solutions; acids and bases; redox reactions. |
| Stage 2 (Year 12) | Monitoring the environment; managing chemical processes; organic and biological chemistry; managing resources. |
How Adelaide Tutors Helps
Lessons work through each topic in step with the subject outline: the idea is explained from first principles, then students practise it on questions of increasing difficulty while the tutor checks their working.
With no more than 6 students in the room, every student's answers are seen each week. Mistakes in setting out a calculation or wording an explanation are corrected when they happen, not discovered in a test.
Assessment and Exam Preparation
In Stage 2 Chemistry, the school assessment is worth 70% of the final result (an investigations folio worth 30% and skills and applications tasks worth 40%) and the end-of-year examination is worth 30%.
Classes therefore prepare students for both: the tests and practical or science-as-a-human-endeavour investigations set by their school during the year, and timed exam-style questions as the examination approaches.
Why Start Early
Stage 2 Chemistry builds directly on Stage 1 ideas such as bonding, the mole, acids and bases and redox. Students who are secure in those ideas find Year 12 far more manageable, which is why starting in Year 11, or at the beginning of Year 12, gives the best return.
